The All Sufficient Savior
To the Angel of the Church of Thyatira Jesus said, “These
things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire and feet like
fine brass.” Revelation 2:18 The church in Thyatira was working in the
service of the Lord Jesus. They had
love, faith, patience and works. The
Lord commended the Church on their works.
He said, “ the last (works) are more than the first”. However, they allowed the doctrine of Jezebel
- immorality and idolatry - to be taught
and practiced in the church. Revelation
2:20
The Lord Jesus said His eyes are like a flame of fire. His eyes illuminate whatever He looks upon. His eyes search the minds and the hearts of
His people. The Lord knew all those in
the church in Thyatira who were following the doctrine and practices of Jezebel. He also knew those in the church who were loyal
to Him. In Jesus’ introduction, He also
said His feet are like fine brass. In
Revelation Chapter 1:15, John said Jesus’ “ feet were like fine brass, as if
refined in a furnace”. Our Lord Jesus,
as it were, walked through the flames of God’s judgment for us. He conquered death and hell. He has the keys of death and hell. Revelation
1:18. Therefore, He has the authority to kill with death, and this is one of
the pronouncements He made on the children of Jezebel.
Our God is holy and He is longsuffering. He
looks for repentance from us when we sin -Verse 21, 22. I have heard the phrases “sin is sin”, “all
sin is the same”. Not really! Some sins have a weightier consequence than
others. Here in Thyatira God is making
an example of those who followed and practiced the doctrine of Jezebel. All of the churches will take notice of what
happened among the members of the church in Thyatira who practiced Jezebel’s
doctrine.
God is Just. God is
fair. The members in Thyatira who did
not adhere to Jezebel’s doctrine, and did not participate in the immorality and
idolatry were not included in the punishment.
The Lord Jesus instead encouraged them to continue “to hold fast what
you have till I come”. This is an encouragement to all those who
would live holy lives. God is watching
and He will reward you. Do not
compromise your beliefs. Do not give in
to pressure to disobey God even if that pressure is coming from members of your
congregation.
To the angel of the church in Sardis, Jesus states “He who
has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars”: “ I know your works, that
you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead”. Revelation 3:1. Even though the Church in Sardis is dead, The
Lord Jesus can restore its life. He has
the seven Spirits of God. He is well
qualified to give life. The Church in
Sardis was surely deceived. They thought
they were alive and doing well. They
were not. They were a few in Sardis who
did not “defile their garments”. The
faithful few who held onto their belief, who decided to follow the Word of
God. The Lord Jesus told them “they
shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy”. This is an encouragement to the faithful few
wherever you are – remain faithful. Do
not give up. Do not give in.
